Halin Meaning in English: The Bisaya Word for Sales (Not Profit)

October 8, 2026 · 6 min read · Halin AI Team

Halin meaning in English: halin is the Bisaya word for sales — Pila imong halin karon? means How much were your sales today? Halin ₱50,000 minus gastos ₱36,000 equals ganansya ₱14,000

In Bisaya (Cebuano), halin means "sales" — the total money you take in from selling goods or services. In English business terms, the closest words are sales, gross sales, or revenue.

When a sari-sari store owner in Cebu says "Dako ang halin karon," they mean "Sales were big today."

But halin is not the same as profit — and mixing up the two is one of the most common mistakes small business owners make, both for decisions and for taxes.

Halin in a sentence

You'll hear halin at markets, carinderias, and online selling groups across the Visayas and Mindanao:

  • Pila imong halin karon? — How much were your sales today?
  • Hinay ang halin karong semanaha. — Sales are slow this week.
  • Nakahalin ko og ₱3,500. — I made ₱3,500 in sales.
  • Halinon nako ni ugma. — I'll sell this tomorrow.

As a verb, mahalin means "to be sold" or "to sell well" — "Dali ra mahalin ang lechon" means "The lechon sells out fast."

Other meanings: in some contexts and other Visayan languages, halin can also mean "to move away" or "to come from" (e.g., mihalin mi = "we moved"). In a business conversation, though, it almost always means sales.

Halin in Tagalog

Tagalog doesn't use halin for sales. The closest Tagalog words are:

  • Benta — sales ("Malakas ang benta ngayon")
  • Pinagbentahan — proceeds from selling
  • Kita — earnings or income (often used loosely for both sales and profit)

So if you're translating halin for a Tagalog speaker, benta is the safest equivalent.

Halin vs. profit: the difference that matters most

Say you sold ₱50,000 worth of products this month. That's your halin. But you also spent ₱30,000 on stock (puhunan), ₱4,000 on delivery and packaging, and ₱2,000 on load, internet, and electricity — ₱36,000 in total.

Your actual profit — ganansya in Bisaya, tubo in Tagalog — is:

₱50,000 halin − ₱36,000 expenses = ₱14,000 ganansya

A business can have big halin and still lose money. That's why "Pila imong halin?" is only half the question. The other half is "Pila imong nagasto?" — how much did you spend? To check your own numbers, read Is Your Business Actually Making Money?

Why halin matters for your BIR taxes

The BIR cares a lot about your halin, because several tax rules are based on gross sales or gross receipts — not profit:

  1. The 8% income tax option. If you elect it, you pay 8% on gross sales above ₱250,000 — no expenses deducted. It's only available if your annual halin is ₱3 million or less. See 8% vs graduated rates.
  2. Percentage tax (Form 2551Q). Non-VAT businesses on graduated rates pay 3% of their quarterly gross sales. See how to file 2551Q.
  3. The ₱3 million VAT threshold. Once your annual halin passes ₱3,000,000, VAT registration becomes mandatory. See crossing ₱3 million.

In other words, every peso of halin has to be recorded — even if most of it goes right back into stock. That's what your books of accounts are for.

How to track your halin without a notebook

Most negosyante track halin the old way: a notebook, a calculator, and a shoebox of receipts. It works — until tax season, when three months of scribbles have to be totaled up.

That's exactly why we named our app Halin AI. You just chat the way you'd tell a friend — "Nakahalin ko og 3,500 kay Aling Nena" — and it's recorded as a sale, filed in your books, and added to your running total. Log expenses the same way (or snap a photo of the receipt), and you'll always know both numbers: your halin and your actual ganansya, plus estimated taxes and reminders before every BIR deadline.

Common questions

What is "halin" in English?

Halin is a Bisaya (Cebuano) word that means sales — the money you receive from selling goods or services. In accounting terms, it's closest to gross sales or revenue.

What does "halin" mean in business?

Your total sales for a period — a day, a week, a quarter — before deducting expenses. It is not your profit.

What is "halin" in Tagalog?

The closest Tagalog equivalent is benta (sales). Kita is also used, though it usually means income or earnings in general.

What's the difference between halin and ganansya?

Halin is total sales. Ganansya is profit — what's left after subtracting your expenses and puhunan from your halin.

Do I pay tax on my halin or my ganansya?

It depends on your tax option. Under the 8% option and percentage tax, tax is computed from gross sales (halin). Under graduated rates, income tax is on net income — closer to your ganansya. See freelance tax in the Philippines.
